The VS1003 from VLSI Solution Oy is a single-chip MP3, WMA, and MIDI audio decoder, also capable of ADPCM encoding. It is designed to operate with a single 12-13 MHz clock and features a proprietary low-power DSP processor core. This IC decodes various audio formats including MPEG 1 & 2 layer III (MP3), WMA 4.0/4.1/7/8/9, WAV (PCM + IMA ADPCM), and General MIDI / SP-MIDI files.
Key features include a high-quality on-chip stereo DAC with no phase error between channels and a stereo earphone driver capable of driving a 30-ohm load. It also offers bass and treble controls and supports streaming for MP3 and WAV formats. The VS1003 includes 5.5 KiB of on-chip RAM for user code and data, serial control and data interfaces, and can function as a slave co-processor. It operates with separate voltages for analog, digital, and I/O, and includes an UART for debugging.
Available in LQFP-48 and BGA-49 packages, the VS1003 is suitable for a wide range of audio applications. Its design allows for new functions to be added via software and its 4 GPIO pins. Potential replacements include the VS1053b, VS1063a, and VS1073a, with VS1053b being the option if MIDI support is required.
The VS1003 can decode MP3 (MPEG 1 & 2 audio layer III), WMA 4.0/4.1/7/8/9, WAV (PCM + IMA ADPCM), and General MIDI / SP-MIDI files.
Yes, the VS1003 can encode IMA ADPCM from microphone or line input.
The VS1003 features an 18-bit oversampling, multi-bit, sigma-delta DAC.
The stereo earphone driver is capable of driving a 30-ohm load.
The VS1003 operates with a single 12 to 13 MHz clock.
The VS1003 has 5.5 KiB of on-chip RAM for user code and data, with an additional 0.5 KiB for user applications.
The VS1003 is available in LQFP-48 and BGA-49 packages.
