VS1003BB

The VS1003BB from VLSI Solution is a versatile slave audio codec circuit designed for MP3, WMA, and MIDI playback. It replaces the discontinued VS1002 and offers wideband speech quality recording capabilities. This IC decodes MP3 (MPEG 1 & 2 audio layer III), WMA (4.0/4.1/7/8/9), WAV (PCM + IMA ADPCM), and General MIDI/SP-MIDI files. It also supports encoding IMA ADPCM from microphone or line input.

Key features include a single 12-13 MHz clock operation, an internal PLL clock multiplier, and low-power consumption. The VS1003BB boasts a high-quality on-chip stereo DAC with no phase error between channels and a stereo earphone driver capable of driving a 30-ohm load. It operates with separate voltages for analog, digital, and I/O, with suggested voltages of 2.8V for AVDD, CVDD, and IOVDD. The chip includes 5.5 KiB of on-chip RAM for user code and data, serial control and data interfaces, and can function as a slave co-processor. SPI flash boot is supported for special applications, and a UART is available for debugging.

Available in LQFP-48 and BGA-49 packages, the VS1003BB is suitable for a wide range of applications including boom-boxes, internet radios, portable karaoke machines, and VoIP speaker phones. Its flexibility allows for new functions to be added via software and its 4 GPIO pins.
