The MAX1698EUB+T is a switch-mode boost controller designed for driving white or color LEDs, ideal for large LED backlit displays in PDAs and laptop computers. It offers greater simplicity, lower cost, higher efficiency, longer bulb life, and greater reliability compared to fluorescent or electroluminescent lamps.
This device regulates LED current rather than output voltage, using a typical 15 Ohm sense resistor. LED current control and dimming are achieved via an adjust input (ADJ). For higher light output, multiple LED banks can be connected in parallel, supporting up to 5W total output power. The MAX1698A variant has a higher, more accurately specified CS current limit for applications of 5W or more.
It operates within a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C (TA) and is supplied in a space-saving 10-pin µMAX package. An evaluation kit, MAX1698EVKIT, is available to expedite design processes.
Key features include over 90% efficiency, lossless adjustable LED brightness, and a compact 10-pin µMAX package, making it a simpler, lower-cost, and more reliable alternative to CCFL or EL backlights.
