The MAX1698EUB from Analog Devices is a high-efficiency step-up current regulator designed for driving white or color LEDs. It is particularly well-suited for large LED backlit displays in devices such as PDAs and laptop computers. This switch-mode boost controller regulates LED current, offering greater simplicity, lower cost, higher efficiency, and longer bulb life compared to traditional fluorescent or electroluminescent lamps.
The device drives series-connected LEDs using a controlled current measured with a sense resistor. LED current control and dimming are managed via an adjust input (ADJ). For applications requiring higher light output, multiple LED banks can be connected in parallel, supporting up to 5W total output power. The MAX1698A variant offers a higher, more accurately specified CS current limit for higher-power applications.
Designed for battery-powered backlight applications, the MAX1698EUB operates within a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. It is supplied in a space-saving 10-pin µMAX package, occupying half the space of an 8-pin SO package. An evaluation kit, MAX1698EVKIT, is available to facilitate design processes.
