The DS1231S-20 from Dallas Semiconductor is a power monitor chip designed to safeguard processor-based systems during power fluctuations. It issues a warning of impending power failure well before regulated DC voltages fall out of specification, allowing for an orderly shutdown.
This chip prevents data corruption in non-volatile memory during power transients and automatically restarts the processor once power is restored and stabilized. It is suitable for both linear and switching power supplies and adjusts to the hold-up time of the power supply. The DS1231S-20 provides necessary signals for processor interface and replaces traditional power-up reset circuitry.
Key features include accurate 5% or 10% VCC monitoring, with selectable thresholds. The chip requires no external capacitors. It is available in an optional 16-pin SOIC surface mount package, designed for ease of integration into various electronic designs.

When TOL is connected to ground, the RST and RST signals become active as VCC goes below 4.75 volts.
When TOL is connected to VCC, the RST and RST signals become active as VCC goes below 4.5 volts.
On power-up, the RST and RST signals are kept active for a minimum of 150 ms.
The VCC monitoring is accurate to 5% or 10%, selectable via the TOL pin.
The DS1231S-20 is available in a 16-pin SOIC (300 mil) surface mount package.
