The Yamaha YMF262-M is a 4-operator FM Synthesis Chip that was instrumental in powering numerous sound cards during the early 1990s, including the SoundBlaster 16 and Pro AudioSpectrum. This chip defined the OPL-3 standard, succeeding the OPL-2 standard.
Each operator within the YMF262-M is a fundamental building block for FM Synthesis, comprising an oscillator, ADSR envelope, amplifier, and a low-frequency oscillator for vibrato or tremolo effects. The chip offers 36 operators, allowing for flexible sound configuration. Sound can be mixed directly from each operator or one operator can be used to modulate the frequency of another.
While slightly different from the YMF2612 used in the Sega Mega Drive, the YMF262-M is also a 4-operator FM Synth chip and produces a very similar sound. Its compact design provides low-noise, high-quality sound output. The OPL-3 standard, defined by this chip, replaced the OPL-2 standard used in earlier Adlib and Sound Blaster music cards.
