The Texas Instruments UCC3957M-2 is a BiCMOS battery pack protector specifically designed for three- or four-cell lithium-ion battery applications. It operates with external P-channel MOSFETs to provide robust protection against overcharge, overdischarge, and excessive discharge currents. The internal state machine continuously monitors each cell, while a separate overcurrent protection block safeguards the battery pack.
Key features include a wide VDD supply range of 6.5V to 20V, low typical supply current consumption of 30 µA, and an even lower 3.5 µA in sleep mode. The device incorporates smart discharge to minimize losses during overcharge and offers externally adjustable delays for the overcurrent controller. It also detects loss-of-cell sense connections.
This IC is housed in a 16-SSOP surface-mount package, making it suitable for various electronic designs. The operating temperature range is -20°C to 70°C (TA). Its primary function is battery protection, supporting Lithium Ion chemistries for 3 to 4 cells.
The UCC3957M-2 is designed to protect battery cells and the IC itself from damage during fault conditions. Its intelligent design helps to minimize power consumption and optimize performance in battery-powered devices.
