The TPS61176RTER from Texas Instruments is an integrated WLED backlight driver suitable for devices powered by single-cell batteries, such as tablets and notebook PCs. It incorporates a high-efficiency boost converter with an integrated 2-A, 40-V power MOSFET and six current sink regulators, capable of driving up to 60 WLEDs.
The device operates with an input voltage range of 2.7-V to 6.5-V and a boost input voltage range of 2.7-V to 24-V. It features a 1-MHz switching frequency and adaptive boost output to WLED voltages. Each of the six current sinks has a capability of 35 mA with ±2% maximum current accuracy and 1.3% typical current matching.
Supporting mixed dimming mode, the TPS61176RTER automatically switches between analog and PWM dimming for increased electrical-to-optical efficiency. It offers programmable switch points (25% or 12.5%) and programmable PWM dimming modes, including 22-kHz PWM dimming and direct PWM dimming, with up to 14-bit dimming resolution and down to 1% dimming duty cycle. The driver includes built-in WLED open and short protection, thermal shutdown, and an input PWM glitch filter.
