The TL431 is a precision programmable shunt voltage reference designed for adjustable voltage and current referencing applications. It allows the output voltage to be set anywhere between Vref (approximately 2.5V) and 36V using two external resistors. This device features specified thermal stability over automotive, commercial, and military temperature ranges, operating from -40°C to 125°C.
With a typical output impedance of 0.2Ω and active output circuitry, the TL431 provides a sharp turn-on characteristic, making it an excellent replacement for Zener diodes in applications such as onboard regulation, adjustable power supplies, and switching power supplies.
