The SN74LS85D is a 4-bit magnitude comparator IC manufactured by Texas Instruments. It is designed to perform comparisons of straight binary and straight BCD (8-4-2-1) codes. The device provides three fully decoded decisions about two 4-bit words (A, B) at its outputs: A>B, A<B, and A=B.
This comparator is fully expandable to any number of bits without requiring external gates. Words of greater length can be compared by cascading multiple SN74LS85D units. The cascading paths are implemented with a two-gate-level delay, optimizing comparison times for longer words. The device operates over a voltage range of 4.75V to 5.25V and has a maximum propagation delay of 45ns at 5V with a 15pF load.
The SN74LS85D is housed in a 16-SOIC package and is designed for surface mount applications. It operates within an ambient temperature range of 0°C to 70°C. Key electrical characteristics include a quiescent current of 400µA and an output current of 8mA.
