SN74F163ADR Description

Short technical summary and product information.

The SN74F163ADR from Texas Instruments is a synchronous, presettable, 4-bit binary counter. It features internal carry look-ahead circuitry for high-speed counting designs. Synchronous operation ensures all flip-flops are clocked simultaneously, eliminating output counting spikes associated with asynchronous counters.

This counter is fully programmable, allowing it to be preset to any number between 0 and 15. Presetting is synchronous, with a low logic level at the LOAD input disabling the counter and synchronizing the outputs with setup data after the next clock pulse. The clear function is also synchronous; a low logic level at the CLR input sets all flip-flop outputs to low after the next low-to-high clock transition.

The device supports cascading for n-bit synchronous applications without additional gating, utilizing ENP and ENT inputs and an RCO output. Both ENP and ENT must be high to count, and ENT enables the RCO output, which produces a high-logic-level pulse when the count reaches 15.

Packaged in a 16-SOIC (0.154", 3.90mm Width) surface-mount package, the SN74F163ADR operates over a temperature range of 0°C to 70°C and requires a supply voltage between 4.5V and 5.5V. Its count rate can reach up to 100 MHz.
