The SN54LS85J from Texas Instruments is a 4-bit magnitude comparator. This integrated circuit performs comparisons of straight binary and straight BCD (8-4-2-1) codes. It provides three fully decoded decisions about two 4-bit words (A, B) that are externally available at three outputs.

 

These devices are fully expandable to any number of bits without external gates. Words of greater length can be compared by connecting comparators in cascade. The cascading paths are implemented with only a two-gate-level delay to reduce overall comparison times for long words.

 

The SN54LS85J is housed in a 16-pin CDIP (J) package and is designed for through-hole mounting. It operates within a wide temperature range of -55°C to 125°C. The standard package quantity is 25 units in a tube.
