The Philips Semiconductors SCC2681 Dual Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (DUART) is a single-chip MOS-LSI communications device providing two independent full-duplex asynchronous receiver/transmitter channels in a single package. It interfaces directly with microprocessors and can be used in polled or interrupt-driven systems. Manufactured in a CMOS process, this DUART offers programmable data format, including 5 to 8 data bits plus parity, and selectable stop bits. Each receiver and transmitter can operate at speeds up to 1Mbps, selectable from 22 fixed baud rates, a 16x clock derived from a programmable counter/timer, or an external 1x or 16x clock.
Key features include quadruple buffered receiver data registers to minimize over-run potential, and a flow control capability. The SCC2681 also includes a multipurpose 7-bit input port and an 8-bit output port, which can be used for general-purpose I/O or assigned specific functions. Error detection for parity, framing, and overrun is supported, along with false start bit and line break detection and generation. The device supports various programmable channel modes, including normal, automatic echo, local loopback, and remote loopback.
This specific variant, SCC2681AC1A44,512, comes in a 44-pin PLCC surface mount package. It operates at a voltage of 5V and supports a maximum data rate of 1Mbps. The DUART is designed for applications requiring dual-speed channel capabilities, such as clustered terminal systems.
