The NXP Semiconductors PCF8537AH/1,518 is a versatile Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) driver IC. It is specifically engineered for high-contrast Vertical Alignment (VA) LCDs, supporting multiplex rates up to 1:8. This single-chip solution generates drive signals for static or multiplexed LCDs with up to eight backplanes, 46 segments, and 352 elements.
Key electrical features include a wide digital power supply range from 1.8 V to 5.5 V and an LCD supply range from 2.5 V to 9.0 V. It offers both a 400 kHz I2C-bus interface (PCF8537AH) and a 5 MHz SPI-bus interface (PCF8537BH). The device includes an internal charge pump for on-chip LCD voltage generation up to 9 V and programmable temperature compensation for stable contrast.
With 352 elements, it can drive up to 44 7-segment alphanumeric characters or 22 14-segment alphanumeric characters. The PCF8537AH/1,518 also features 352-bit RAM for display data storage, programmable frame frequency from 60 Hz to 300 Hz, and an integrated temperature sensor. It operates within a temperature range of -40°C to 80°C and is available in a 64-TQFP package for surface mounting.
Applications for this LCD driver include white goods, handheld electronics, battery-operated equipment, machine control systems, measuring equipment, information boards, panels, consumer electronics, industrial applications, and medical and health care devices.
