The PCA9955BTWJ from NXP Semiconductors is a 16-channel constant current LED driver optimized for dimming and blinking RGBA LEDs. It features an I2C-bus interface with Fm+ capabilities, allowing for high-speed communication.
Each of the 16 outputs has an individual 8-bit PWM controller operating at 31.25 kHz, enabling precise brightness control. Additionally, a group PWM controller with a fixed frequency of 122 Hz can be used for synchronized dimming or blinking of all LEDs. The device supports a supply voltage range of 3V to 5.5V, with LED outputs capable of handling up to 20V.
The output peak current is adjustable from 225 μA to 57 mA via an 8-bit linear DAC. Gradation control is managed through the I2C-bus, allowing automatic current ramping without MCU intervention. The PCA9955BTWJ includes built-in circuitry for open, short load, and overtemperature detection, with a thermal shutdown feature for protection.
This LED driver is supplied in a 28-HTSSOP package suitable for surface mounting. Its versatile features make it ideal for amusement products and backlighting applications requiring sophisticated LED control.
