The PCA9685PW,118 from NXP Semiconductors is an I2C-bus controlled 16-channel LED controller designed for applications like RGBA color backlighting. Each of its 16 outputs features a 12-bit resolution (4096 steps) PWM controller, allowing for adjustable brightness from 0% to 100% at programmable frequencies between 24 Hz and 1526 Hz. The device operates within a supply voltage range of 2.3 V to 5.5 V, with inputs and outputs being 5.5 V tolerant.

The LED output driver can be configured as either open-drain with a 25 mA current sink capability at 5 V, or as a totem pole with a 25 mA sink and 10 mA source capability at 5 V. This flexibility allows direct connection of LEDs (up to 25 mA, 5.5 V) or control of higher current/voltage LEDs with external drivers. The PCA9685 is part of the Fast-mode Plus (Fm+) I2C family, supporting higher bus frequencies up to 1 MHz.

Unique features of the PCA9685 include independently programmable on and off times for each channel to minimize current surges, and a programmable prescaler for synchronizing multiple devices.
