The MIC4690 SuperSwitcher™ is a 500kHz step-down PWM voltage regulator from Micrel Inc. It is designed to deliver over 1A of continuous output current across a wide input voltage range of 4V to 34V. The high switching frequency allows for the use of small surface-mount inductors and capacitors, making it suitable for compact designs.
This regulator features internal compensation for fast transient response and requires a minimum number of external components. It is housed in an 8-lead SO (small outline) package, which can replace larger TO-220 and TO-263 packages in many applications. The MIC4690 includes built-in safety features such as over-current protection, frequency foldback protection, and thermal shutdown.
The output voltage is adjustable down to 1.23V. Applications include simple 1A step-down regulators, replacements for TO-220 and TO-263 designs, and various voltage conversions like 12V to 5V/3.3V/2.5V/1.8V/1.5V and 5V to 2.5V/1.8V/1.5V. It is also suitable for on-card switching regulators, hard disk drives, cable modems, and simple battery chargers.
