The MIC3287 from Microchip Technology is a 1.2MHz pulse width modulated (PWM) step-up switching regulator designed for constant current white LED driving applications. With a switch current exceeding 350mA, it can drive a string of up to 4 white LEDs in series, ensuring uniform brightness and eliminating the need for multiple ballast resistors.
This device operates with a constant frequency PWM current-mode control scheme, which reduces external component sizes and minimizes noise and input ripple. The feedback voltage is set to 250mV for optimal efficiency. The MIC3287 offers an input voltage range of 2.8V to 6.5V and can provide up to 36V output voltage without over-voltage protection, or an optional 24V over-voltage protection (OVP).
Key features include <1% line and load regulation, <1µA shutdown current, over-temperature protection, and under-voltage lockout (UVLO). The MIC3287 is available in a low-profile Thin SOT-23-5 package, making it suitable for space-constrained designs. Its junction temperature range is -40°C to +125°C.
Applications include white LED backlighting for cell phones, PDAs, GPS systems, digital cameras, MP3 players, and IP phones, as well as LED flashlights and constant current power supplies.
