The MC33771BSP1AER2 from NXP Semiconductors is a SMARTMOS lithium-ion battery cell controller IC. It is engineered for demanding applications such as hybrid electric (HEV) and electric vehicles (EV), as well as industrial energy storage systems (ESS) and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.
This device performs critical functions including ADC conversions of differential cell voltages and current, battery coulomb counting, and battery temperature measurements. The data is digitally transmitted via Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or Transformer Isolation (TPL) to a microcontroller. Key electrical features include operation from 9.6 V to 63 V with a 75 V transient capability, management of 7 to 14 cells, and a low maximum total voltage measurement error of 0.8 mV.
It offers a 4.0 Mbps SPI communication interface and includes features like synchronized cell voltage/current measurement with coulomb count, total stack voltage measurement, and seven GPIO/temperature sensor inputs. The IC provides a 5.0 V at 5.0 mA reference supply output and incorporates automatic over/undervoltage and temperature detection. Onboard passive cell balancing with diagnostics is also included, supporting up to 300 mA.
The MC33771BSP1AER2 is designed for surface mounting in a 64-LQFP Exposed Pad package. It is hot-plug capable and designed to support ISO 26262 up to ASIL D safety systems, and is qualified in compliance with AEC-Q100.
