MC14489BDWE

The MC14489BDWE is a flexible LED driver designed by NXP Semiconductors. It directly interfaces with individual lamps, 7-segment displays, or combinations of both. This CMOS device operates within a voltage range of 4.5V to 5.5V and a junction temperature range of -40°C to 130°C.

Communication with a microcontroller is established through a synchronous serial port. The MC14489BDWE features data retention, decode, and scan circuitry, reducing processor overhead. A single current-setting resistor is the only required ancillary component. The device can drive various configurations, including 5-digit displays with decimals, 4.5-digit displays with decimals and sign, or up to 25 lamps.

It is compatible with Motorola SPI and National MICROWIRE serial data ports. The chip includes patented 8itGrabber registers for random access without steering or address bits. A 24-bit transfer updates the display register, while an 8-bit transfer changes the configuration register. The component is supplied in a 20-SOIC package and is suitable for surface mounting.

Key features include current sources controlled by a single resistor for anode drive and low-resistance FET switches for common cathode interface. It also offers a low-power mode for extinguishing LEDs and brightness control via the serial port. Special circuitry minimizes EMI during operation and eliminates it in low-power mode. A Power-On Reset (POR) function blanks the display on power-up.
