The MAX8856ETD+ from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a complete 1-cell Li+ battery charge management IC designed for use with USB ports or AC adapters. It integrates essential components like a battery disconnect switch, current-sense circuit, and thermal regulation, simplifying the charging solution.
This IC supports a charging sequence from power-OK indication through prequalification, fast-charge, top-off charge, and finally charging-complete indication. Charging is controlled using constant current, constant voltage, or constant die-temperature regulation for safe operation. It offers selectable input current limits of 100mA, 500mA, or up to 1A to comply with USB requirements, and features a USB-compliant suspend mode drawing only 20µA.
The MAX8856ETD+ operates from a 4.25V to 5.5V supply, with undervoltage lockout below 3.4V and overvoltage protection up to 14V. It includes a proprietary thermal-regulation circuitry that limits the die temperature to +100°C. Additional safety features include an NTC thermistor input for battery protection. The device provides a 3.5V to 4.2V SYS output to power the system, even with a deeply discharged or absent battery, and a 3.3V/500µA VL output.
Packaged in a small, 3mm x 3mm thermally enhanced TDFN package with a maximum height of 0.8mm, the MAX8856ETD+ is suitable for space-constrained applications. Its integrated 50mΩ battery switch and automatic current sharing between battery charging and system load make it an efficient choice for portable electronics.
