The MAX8677CETG+ from Maxim Integrated is a versatile integrated circuit designed for charging 1-cell Li+ batteries. It functions as both a charger and a Smart Power Selector, featuring dual power inputs for USB and AC adapters, or a single input that accepts both. This IC eliminates the need for external MOSFETs, as all power switching for charging and load management is handled on-chip.
The device offers independent setup for battery charge current up to 1.5A and input current limit up to 2A. It intelligently utilizes input power not consumed by the system to charge the battery. The USB input current can be configured for 100mA or 500mA. Automatic input selection seamlessly switches the system load between battery and external power sources. Key features include input overvoltage protection up to 16V, a 40mΩ system-to-battery switch, thermal regulation to prevent overheating, and various status indicators like PREQ, CHG, DOK, UOK, and FLT. The system regulation voltage is typically 4.35V.
Designed for applications such as PDAs, smart cell phones, portable media players, GPS navigation devices, and digital cameras, the MAX8677CETG+ simplifies power management in portable electronics. Its compact 4mm x 4mm, 24-pin TQFN-EP package is suitable for space-constrained designs. The system operates even with a discharged or no battery present, and it supports load peaks exceeding adapter ratings by drawing power from the battery.
