The MAX840ESA+ is a low-noise, inverting charge-pump power supply designed by Analog Devices Inc. (formerly Maxim Integrated) for applications such as biasing GaAsFETs in cellular telephone transmitter amplifiers. It accepts an input voltage range of 2.5V to 10V and can deliver up to 4mA of output current. The MAX840ESA+ offers a fixed -2V preset output, or an adjustable output ranging from -0.5V to -9.4V, controlled by an external voltage.
This device is designed to operate with small capacitors, as low as 0.22µF, and features an internal linear regulator that reduces output voltage ripple to a mere 1mVp-p. The charge pump operates at 100kHz in normal mode and can enter a low-power shutdown mode (for MAX840/MAX843 variants) drawing less than 1µA. The MAX844 variant's unregulated output remains active in shutdown at 20kHz, suitable for low-power LCD supplies.
The MAX840ESA+ is housed in a compact 8-pin SOIC package, suitable for surface mounting. Its low noise and regulated negative output make it a versatile solution for GaAsFET bias, personal communicators, PDAs, and wireless data loggers.
