The MAX797HESE from Analog Devices / Maxim Integrated is a high-performance, step-down DC-DC converter controller. It is designed to provide main CPU power in battery-powered systems, featuring a high input voltage rating of up to 40V, allowing operation with high-cell-count batteries and various AC adaptors.
This buck controller achieves up to 96% efficiency through synchronous rectification and Maxim's proprietary Idle Mode™ control scheme, which helps extend battery life. It offers excellent dynamic response, correcting output transients within five 300kHz clock cycles. The device utilizes unique bootstrap circuitry to drive inexpensive N-channel MOSFETs, reducing system cost.
The MAX797HESE operates in a logic-controlled, synchronizable, fixed-frequency PWM mode, reducing noise and RF interference. It supports 150kHz/300kHz fixed-frequency operation and features a SKIP override input for automatic switchover to idle-mode operation at light loads or fixed-frequency mode for lowest noise. The controller provides adjustable outputs from 2.5V to 6V and preset 3.3V and 5V outputs, capable of handling up to 10A. It also includes a 5V linear-regulator output and a precision 2.505V reference output.
Packaged in a 16-pin narrow SOIC, the MAX797HESE is suitable for surface mounting. Its operating temperature range is -40°C to 85°C (TA). Key features include programmable soft-start, low quiescent current (375µA typical), and a shutdown current of 1µA. Applications include notebook and subnotebook computers, and industrial controls.
