The MAX786CAI is a versatile power-supply controller from Analog Devices, engineered for applications such as notebook computers and portable data terminals. It integrates two high-performance step-down (buck) pulse-width modulators (PWMs) for +3.3V and +5V outputs, alongside dual low-dropout micropower linear regulators suitable for CMOS/RTC back-up.
This device achieves high efficiency, reaching up to 95% at 2A and maintaining over 80% efficiency at loads from 5mA to 3A. This is accomplished through synchronous rectification and PWM operation at heavy loads, and Idle Mode operation at light loads. The MAX786CAI operates at high frequencies (300kHz/200kHz) allowing for the use of physically small components, including output filter capacitors as small as 30µF per ampere of load.
Key features include two precision comparators or level translators, a wide 5.5V to 30V input range, and low quiescent and shutdown currents. The controller is available in a compact 28-pin SSOP package, suitable for surface-mount applications. Its design facilitates low system cost through a high level of integration and the use of external N-channel MOSFETs.
