The MAX764EPA from Analog Devices / Maxim Integrated is a highly efficient inverting switching regulator designed for low-power applications. It operates with an input voltage range of 3V to 16V and provides a preset -5V output, which can also be adjusted from -1V to -16V using external resistors. This device utilizes a unique current-limited, pulse-frequency-modulated (PFM) control scheme, combining the efficiency of PFM converters at light loads with the performance of PWM converters at heavy loads. It draws a low supply current of less than 120µA.
Key features include a 250mA output current capability and a high switching frequency of up to 300kHz, allowing for the use of miniature external components. The MAX764EPA incorporates an internal P-channel power MOSFET, minimizing component count. It is suitable for applications such as LCD-bias generators, portable instruments, LAN adapters, remote data-acquisition systems, and other battery-powered devices. The regulator is housed in an 8-pin PDIP package and is designed for through-hole mounting.
