The MAX7221EWG is a compact, serial input/output common-cathode display driver designed to interface microprocessors with 7-segment numeric LED displays of up to 8 digits, bar-graph displays, or 64 individual LEDs. It includes on-chip BCD code-B decoding, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, and an 8x8 static RAM.
Key features include a 10MHz serial interface compatible with SPI, QSPI, and MICROWIRE, along with slew-rate-limited segment drivers for reduced EMI. The device offers a convenient 4-wire serial interface for easy connection to common microprocessors. Individual digits can be addressed and updated independently without rewriting the entire display. Users can select code-B decoding or no-decode for each digit.
Additional functionalities include a 150μA low-power shutdown mode with data retention, digital and analog brightness control, and a scan-limit register allowing display of 1 to 8 digits. A test mode is also included to force all LEDs on. The MAX7221EWG is available in 24-Pin DIP and SO packages, with operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +85°C.
