MAX7221EWG+ Description

Short technical summary and product information.

The MAX7221EWG+ is a serial input/output common-cathode display driver designed to interface microprocessors with 7-segment numeric LED displays of up to 8 digits. It also supports bar-graph displays and 64 individual LEDs. The device includes on-chip BCD code-B decoding, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, and an 8x8 static RAM.

Key features include a 10MHz serial interface compatible with SPI, QSPI, and MICROWIRE, slew-rate-limited segment drivers for reduced EMI, and individual LED segment control. It offers decode/no-decode digit selection, a 150μA low-power shutdown mode with data retention, and digital and analog brightness control. The display is blanked on power-up, and the scan-limit register allows for displaying 1 to 8 digits. A test mode forces all LEDs on.

This display driver operates over a voltage range of 4V to 5.5V and has an operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. It is housed in a 24-SOIC package with a surface mount type. The current consumption is rated at 330 mA.

Applications for the MAX7221EWG+ include bar-graph displays, industrial controllers, panel meters, and LED matrix displays.
