The MAX713CPE+ from Analog Devices is a fast-charge controller for Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) batteries. It is capable of charging 1 to 16 series cells at rates from C/4 to 4C, with a C/16 trickle-charge rate. The device automatically switches from fast to trickle charge.
Key features include voltage slope, temperature, and timer-based fast-charge cutoff. It can supply the battery's load while charging in linear mode and draws a maximum of 5µA from the battery when not charging. The MAX713CPE+ operates from a DC source at least 1.5V higher than the maximum battery voltage and includes an on-board +5V shunt regulator to power external logic.
This component is housed in a 16-pin DIP package and is designed for through-hole mounting. It is suitable for a wide range of battery-powered equipment applications, including portable consumer products, cellular phones, and laptop computers.
