The MAX712ESE+T from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a fast-charge controller IC specifically designed for Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) batteries. It enables charging of 1 to 16 series cells at rates from C/4 up to 4C, with a trickle-charge rate of C/16. Charge completion is determined by a combination of voltage slope detection, timer, and temperature window.
This controller operates from a 5.5V supply and can power the battery's load while charging in linear mode. It draws a maximum of 5µA from the battery when not charging. The device is housed in a 16-SOIC package and is suitable for surface mounting. It operates within an ambient temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.
Key features include automatic switching from fast to trickle charge, linear mode power control, and a 5V shunt regulator for external logic. The MAX712/MAX713 series is ideal for a wide range of battery-powered equipment, including portable consumer products, cellular phones, and laptop computers.
