The MAX712CSE from Analog Devices is a versatile battery charger integrated circuit specifically designed for Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) batteries. This IC can charge 1 to 16 series cells from a DC source at rates up to 4C, with a trickle charge rate of C/16. It features voltage-slope detecting analog-to-digital converters, timers, and temperature window comparators to determine charge completion.
The MAX712CSE operates with a supply voltage of 5.5V and functions within an ambient temperature range of 0°C to 70°C. It is housed in a 16-SOIC package, suitable for surface mount applications. The device draws a maximum of 5µA from the battery when not charging and can supply the battery's load while charging in linear mode. External components required are minimal, including a PNP transistor, blocking diode, resistors, and capacitors.
This battery charger IC is ideal for a wide range of portable electronic devices, including laptops, palmtop computers, cellular phones, and other consumer products requiring reliable battery management.
