The MAX6959AAEE from Analog Devices / Maxim Integrated is a compact, multiplexed common-cathode display driver designed to interface microprocessors with seven-segment numeric LED digits and discrete LEDs. It supports a 3V to 5.5V operating voltage range and utilizes an SMBus™- and I²C-compatible 2-wire serial interface, offering compatibility with 2.5V and 3.3V systems.
This driver can control up to four 7-segment digits with decimal points, plus four discrete LEDs, or up to 36 discrete LEDs if decimal points are not used. The MAX6959 variant includes two input ports configurable as a key-switch reader, capable of scanning and debouncing up to eight switches. Key features include a hexadecimal font, multiplex scan circuitry, anode and cathode drivers, and static RAM for digit storage. The peak segment current is internally set to 23mA, with a 64-step digital brightness control for intensity adjustment. It also offers a low-power shutdown mode (20µA) with data retention.
The MAX6958/MAX6959 series is available in 16-pin PDIP and QSOP packages and is fully specified for the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range. The LED drivers are slew-rate-limited to reduce EMI, making them suitable for various display applications requiring efficient and reliable LED control.
