The MAX6958BAEE+T is a compact, multiplexed common-cathode display driver designed to interface microprocessors with seven-segment numeric LED digits or discrete LEDs. It utilizes an SMBus™ and I²C-compatible 2-wire serial interface with fixed logic thresholds for compatibility with 2.5V and 3.3V systems when powered from a 5V supply.

 

This driver can control up to four 7-segment digits, each with decimal points, plus four discrete LEDs. Alternatively, it can drive up to 36 discrete LEDs if the digit decimal points are not used. Key features include a hexadecimal font, multiplex scan circuitry, anode and cathode drivers, and static RAM for digit storage. The peak segment current is internally set to 23mA, with a 64-step digital brightness control for intensity adjustment.

 

The MAX6958BAEE+T includes a low-power shutdown mode (20µA) that retains data, a scan-limit register for controlling the number of displayed digits, and a test mode. The LED drivers are slew-rate-limited to reduce EMI. It is specified for the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range and is available in a 16-pin QSOP package.

 

Applications include various display systems requiring efficient LED control, such as industrial equipment, consumer electronics, and automotive dashboards where space and power efficiency are critical.
