The MAX6952EAX+ from Analog Devices is a compact cathode-row display driver designed to interface microprocessors with 5x7 dot-matrix LED displays. It supports a high-speed 26MHz SPI, QSPI, or MICROWIRE-compatible serial interface and operates within a voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V.
This driver can drive up to four digits, accommodating 140 LEDs in total. It includes a built-in ASCII 104-character font and circuitry for multiplex scanning, column, and row drivers. Static RAM is integrated to store digit and font data, including 24 user-definable characters. The segment current for the LEDs is managed by an internal digit-by-digit digital brightness control, offering 16 steps for adjustment.
Key features include a low-power shutdown mode consuming only 36µA with data retained, automatic blinking control for each segment, and a test mode that forces all LEDs on. The LED drivers are slew rate limited to reduce EMI. The device is available in a 36-pin SSOP package and is suitable for surface mounting.
Applications for the MAX6952EAX+ include message boards, medical equipment, industrial displays, audio/video equipment, and gaming machines where clear and controllable LED matrix displays are required.
