The MAX686EEE from Analog Devices is a versatile DAC-controlled boost/inverter integrated circuit designed to provide positive or negative LCD bias voltages up to +27.5V or -27.5V. It features an internal 500mA, 28V N-channel MOSFET switch, eliminating the need for an external FET. The output voltage is digitally adjustable via a 6-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC).
This IC operates with an input voltage range of +2.7V to +5.5V for the IC itself and +0.8V to +27.5V for the inductor. It utilizes a current-limited, pulse-frequency-modulation (PFM) control scheme, achieving high efficiency up to 90% over a wide load range. Its high switching frequency of up to 300kHz allows for the use of small external components, contributing to space savings.
The MAX686EEE includes an LCDON output for automatic disabling of the LCD bias voltage when display logic voltage is removed, protecting the display. It also features a Power-OK indicator. With a typical quiescent supply current of 65µA and a shutdown current of 1.5µA, it is suitable for battery-powered portable equipment.
The device is housed in a compact 16-pin QSOP package, offering a space-saving solution comparable in size to an 8-pin SO package. It is suitable for applications such as personal digital assistants, notebook computers, portable data-collection terminals, palmtop computers, and varactor tuning diode bias.
