The MAX686EEE+ is a versatile DAC-controlled boost/inverter integrated circuit from Analog Devices, designed to provide positive or negative LCD bias voltages up to +27.5V or -27.5V. It features an internal N-channel MOSFET switch with a current capability of 600mA and a 28V rating, eliminating the need for an external FET. The output voltage is digitally adjustable via a 6-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC).
This IC operates with an input voltage range of +2.7V to +5.5V for the IC itself, and +0.8V to +27.5V for the inductor. It utilizes a current-limited, pulse-frequency-modulation (PFM) control scheme, achieving high efficiency over a wide range of load conditions. Its high switching frequency, up to 300kHz, allows for the use of small external components, contributing to space savings.
The MAX686EEE+ includes an LCDON output that automatically disables the LCD bias voltage when the display logic voltage is removed, protecting the display. With a typical quiescent supply current of 65µA and a shutdown current of 1.5µA, it is an excellent choice for battery-powered portable equipment such as Personal Digital Assistants, Notebook Computers, Portable Data-Collection Terminals, and Palmtop Computers.
The device is housed in a compact 16-pin QSOP package, offering a small footprint comparable to an 8-pin SO package. It also features a Power-OK indicator.
