The MAX6654MEE+ from Analog Devices is a precise digital thermometer designed to monitor temperatures of both its own die and a remote P-N junction. This remote junction can be a simple diode-connected transistor, such as a 2N3904 or 2N3906, eliminating the need for conventional thermistors or thermocouples. The device boasts a remote accuracy of ±1°C across multiple transistor manufacturers without requiring calibration.
Featuring an I²C-compatible/SMBus 2-wire serial interface, the MAX6654MEE+ accepts standard commands to program alarm thresholds and read temperature data. Users can configure the conversion rate to optimize supply current and update rate. When operating at 1Hz or slower, it enters an extended mode providing 10-bit-plus-sign resolution with 0.125°C LSB. A parasitic resistance cancellation (PRC) mode is also available for rates at or below 1Hz, improving accuracy by canceling series resistance effects on the external diode.
This temperature sensor operates from a 3V to 5.5V supply range and is housed in a compact 16-QSOP surface-mount package. It is suitable for applications requiring accurate temperature monitoring, such as in desktop and notebook computers.
