The MAX6639AEE+ from Maxim Integrated is a versatile 2-channel temperature monitor designed for applications like desktop computers, notebooks, servers, and networking equipment. It monitors its own temperature and one or two external diode-connected transistors, commonly found in CPUs, FPGAs, or GPUs.
This IC features a 2-wire SMBus interface for reading temperature data and programming alarm thresholds. It includes a local temperature sensor and provides 1°C remote temperature accuracy. The device also incorporates a dual PWM fan-speed controller that adjusts fan speeds based on temperature, minimizing noise when cool and maximizing cooling when power dissipation increases. Fan speed is controlled via tachometer feedback with ±3% accuracy.
The MAX6639AEE+ operates from a 3.0V to 3.6V supply and consumes only 500µA of current. It is available in 16-pin QSOP and 16-pin thin QFN packages. Programmable alarm outputs can generate interrupts or shutdown signals for fail-safe system protection. The device measures temperatures up to +150°C and supports PWM output frequencies up to 25kHz.
