The MAX6639AEE+ from Analog Devices is a versatile temperature monitoring IC designed for thermal management in systems like desktop computers, notebooks, servers, and networking equipment. It features two thermal-diode inputs for monitoring external components such as CPUs, FPGAs, or GPUs, along with an internal temperature sensor.
This device operates over a voltage range of 3.0V to 3.6V and consumes a low supply current of 500µA. It communicates via a 2-wire SMBus interface, allowing for easy reading of temperature data and programming of alarm thresholds. The MAX6639AEE+ offers 1°C remote temperature accuracy and measures temperatures up to 150°C.
Integrated within the MAX6639AEE+ is a dual PWM fan-speed controller that automatically adjusts fan speeds based on temperature readings. This feature helps minimize noise during cool operation and provides maximum cooling when power dissipation increases. Fan speed control is achieved through tachometer feedback, ensuring accurate speed regulation with ±3% accuracy. The device also provides programmable fan-control characteristics, automatic fan spin-up, and controlled rate-of-change adjustments for unobtrusive fan-speed changes.
Available in a 16-pin QSOP package, the MAX6639AEE+ is suitable for surface-mount applications. It includes programmable alarm outputs that can be used for interrupts, throttle signals, or overtemperature shutdown signals, enhancing system protection.
