The MAX5925DEUB hot swap controller by Maxim Integrated facilitates the safe insertion and removal of circuit cards into live backplanes. This device operates with supply voltages ranging from 1V to 13.2V, provided the VCC is at or above 2.25V and the hot-swapped supply (VS) does not exceed VCC.
Key features include limiting inrush current and providing overcurrent protection through a circuit-breaker function. The MAX5925DEUB can operate with or without a sense resistor. When operating without a sense resistor, it utilizes load-probing circuitry to detect short circuits during startup and then gradually turns on the external MOSFET. On-chip comparators monitor the voltage drop across the external MOSFET's on-resistance for overcurrent protection, disconnecting the load in fault conditions.
Integrated features reduce component count and design time, offering configurable turn-on voltage, slew rate, and circuit-breaker threshold. An on-board charge pump drives a low-cost, external nMOSFET. The MAX5925DEUB is available in a 10-pin μMAX package and features temperature-compensated RDS(ON) sensing with a temperature coefficient of 3300ppm/°C. Autoretry or latched fault management configurations are also available.
Applications for this device include base stations, RAID systems, remote-access servers, network routers and switches, servers, and portable device bays.
