MAX5920BESA+T

The MAX5920BESA+T is a hot swap controller IC from Analog Devices / Maxim Integrated, designed to allow safe insertion and removal of circuit cards from live backplanes, particularly in -48V power systems. It operates within a voltage range of -20V to -80V and features programmable inrush and short-circuit current limits, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and overvoltage protection (OVP).

This controller provides essential protection against glitches, power-supply rail disturbances, and damage to board connectors and components during hot-plug events. It includes features like circuit-breaker immunity to input voltage steps and current spikes, and can withstand -100V input transients without external components. A power-good status output is available for enabling downstream converters, and a built-in thermal shutdown feature protects the external MOSFET from overheating.

The MAX5920BESA+T is available in an 8-pin SOIC package and is specified for an extended operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. Its surface mount type and compact 8-SOIC package make it suitable for various telecom line cards, network switches/routers, central-office line cards, server line cards, and base-station line cards.

Key features include fault timeout, latched fault, and thermal limit capabilities. The device operates with a low supply current of 700µA and has no internal switches, requiring external MOSFETs for operation. This design allows for precise control over inrush current and fault conditions.
