The MAX5216GUA+ from Analog Devices is a pin-compatible, 16-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC). This single-channel, low-power device provides a buffered voltage output and is designed for rail-to-rail operation. It utilizes a precision external reference applied through a high-resistance input, contributing to low system power consumption.
The DAC accepts a wide supply voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V, making it suitable for various low-power and low-voltage applications. It features a 3-wire SPI-compatible serial interface, which saves board space and simplifies design, especially in isolated applications. The device minimizes digital noise feedthrough by powering down SCLK and DIN input buffers after each serial input frame.
On power-up, the MAX5216GUA+ resets the DAC output to zero, providing safety for applications driving transducers that need to be off initially. The buffered output ensures a low supply current of 80 µA (max) and a low offset error of ±0.25mV. An asynchronous CLR pin can clear the DAC output to zero independently of the serial interface.
This DAC is available in an ultra-small 3mm x 5mm, 8-pin µMAX package and is specified for the -40°C to +105°C extended industrial temperature range. Its features make it suitable for applications such as 2-wire sensors, communication systems, automatic tuning, gain and offset adjustment, power amplifier control, process control, portable instrumentation, and automatic test equipment.
