MAX487ECPA

The MAX487ECPA is a low-power transceiver designed for RS-485 and RS-422 communication applications, particularly in harsh environments. It operates from a single +5V supply and provides robust protection for both driver outputs and receiver inputs against ±15kV electrostatic discharge (ESD) shocks without latchup.

This transceiver supports data transmission rates of up to 2.5Mbps when not limited by slew rate. For applications sensitive to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and cable reflections, reduced slew-rate versions are available, allowing for error-free data transmission up to 250kbps. The device draws minimal supply current, as little as 120µA when unloaded or with disabled drivers, and can enter a low-current shutdown mode consuming only 0.5µA.

Key features include short-circuit current limiting and thermal shutdown protection for the drivers. The receiver input includes a fail-safe feature that ensures a logic-high output if the input is open. The MAX487E variant offers quarter-unit-load receiver input impedance, enabling up to 128 transceivers on a single bus. This specific model is designed for half-duplex communication.

The MAX487ECPA is supplied in an 8-SOIC package and is designed for surface mount applications. Its combination of low power consumption, high data rates, and ESD protection makes it suitable for various industrial control and communication systems.
