The MAX3218EAP+ is a low-power RS-232 transceiver designed for battery-powered applications. It operates from a single supply voltage range of +1.8V to +4.25V, making it suitable for devices running on two alkaline, NiCd, or NiMH cells without a voltage regulator.
This transceiver offers a guaranteed data rate of 120kbps, ensuring compatibility with common PC communication software. A key feature is Maxim's AutoShutdown™ technology, which reduces supply current to as low as 1μA when no valid signal is detected on the receiver inputs. This power-saving feature activates automatically when the RS-232 cable is disconnected or the connected peripheral's transmitters are off, and the system powers back up when a valid signal is reapplied.
The MAX3218EAP+ supports two drivers and two receivers, meeting EIA/TIA-232E specifications. It provides three-state receiver outputs, allowing multiple receivers on the same bus, even with different interface standards.
