The MAX31760AEE+T by Analog Devices is a versatile integrated circuit designed for precision fan-speed control. It accurately measures both local die temperature and remote temperatures from discrete diode-connected transistors, commonly found on CPUs or GPUs. The device features an I2C-compatible interface for setting multiple temperature thresholds, including local and remote overtemperature (OT) conditions.
Fan speed is managed through a 48-step nonvolatile lookup table (LUT) that maps temperature readings to user-programmed PWM values. This LUT-based architecture allows for smooth, nonlinear fan speed versus temperature transfer functions, minimizing acoustic fan noise. The MAX31760AEE+T supports automatic operation at power-on with settings stored in nonvolatile memory.
Key features include two tachometer inputs for independent fan speed measurement, a multiplexed fan-failure output/full-speed fan-drive input pin (FF/FS), and a dedicated ALERT pin for temperature fault reporting. The SHDN pin can be asserted low for system overtemperature shutdown. With an operating voltage range of 3.0V to 3.6V and an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, this IC is suitable for demanding applications.
Applications for the MAX31760AEE+T include servers, networking equipment, set-top boxes (STBs), digital video recorders (DVRs), and Network Attached Storage (NAS)/Direct Attached Storage (DAS) systems requiring reliable thermal management.
