The MAX3131CAI is an integrated hybrid microcircuit combining an IrDA 1.2 compatible infrared transceiver with an RS-232 interface, all powered by a single 3V supply. The infrared transceiver supports data rates from 2.4kbps to 115kbps, featuring a high-gain/low-noise PIN-diode amplifier and a high-power LED driver. The on-board encoder/decoder allows IrDA communication even with non-IrDA UARTs.

 

The device also includes a 2-driver/2-receiver RS-232 transceiver supporting data rates up to 120kbps. It operates from a +3.0V to +5.5V supply, delivering true RS-232 performance. Selectable shutdown for IR and RS-232 circuitry reduces supply current to 1µA.

 

This transceiver requires minimal external components, including four 0.1µF capacitors, a photodiode, an infrared LED, and a current-setting resistor. It is suitable for applications such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), Palmtop Computers, Battery-Powered Systems, Hand-Held Equipment, Peripherals, Cellular Phones, and other IrDA applications.

 

The MAX3131CAI is supplied in a 28-SSOP package and is designed for surface mount applications. It operates within a temperature range of 0°C to 70°C.
