The MAX3110ECWI from Analog Devices is a highly integrated solution combining a universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) with ±15kV ESD-protected RS-232 transceivers and internal charge-pump capacitors. This integration reduces cost and board space, making it ideal for space-, cost-, and power-constrained applications.

 

This device operates from a single supply voltage of +4.5V to +5.5V and consumes only 600µA of supply current during normal operation. It supports a guaranteed data rate of up to 230kbps while maintaining true EIA/TIA-232 output voltage levels. The UART includes a software-programmable baud-rate generator for common baud rates and features an 8-word-deep receive FIFO to minimize processor overhead.

 

The MAX3110ECWI also features an SPI/QSPI™/MICROWIRE®-compatible serial interface, saving additional board space and microcontroller I/O pins. The receivers remain active in a shutdown mode, allowing external devices to be monitored while consuming only 10µA. It is available in a 28-pin SOIC package.

 

Key applications include Point-of-Sale (POS) devices, handy-terminals, telecom/networking diagnostic ports, industrial front-panel interfaces, and hand-held/battery-powered equipment.
