MAX3100EEE+T

The MAX3100EEE+T from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a versatile universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) controller optimized for compact microcontroller-based systems. It utilizes an SPI/MICROWIRE interface for communication with the host microcontroller and is housed in a 16-QSOP package.

This UART controller supports asynchronous I/O suitable for RS-232, RS-485, and IR data links, including a specific IrDA timing mode for easy infrared communication. It operates with a supply voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V and consumes a low operating current of 150µA. The device includes a baud-rate generator capable of supporting common baud rates up to 230k baud with a 3.6864MHz crystal.

Key features include an 8-word FIFO buffer to minimize processor overhead, a flexible interrupt system with four maskable sources, and support for 9-bit address recognition on networks. It also offers a shutdown mode that reduces quiescent current to 10µA while still detecting receiver activity. The TX and RTS outputs can sink 25mA, making them suitable for directly driving opto-couplers in isolated RS-232/RS-485 applications.

The MAX3100EEE+T is designed for applications such as handheld instruments, intelligent instrumentation, small networks in HVAC or building control, and low-cost IR data links for computers and peripherals. Its small package size and low power consumption make it ideal for space-constrained designs.
