The MAX3100EEE is a Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART) designed by Maxim Integrated for small microcontroller-based systems. It utilizes an SPI/MICROWIRE interface for communication with the host microcontroller and is available in compact QSOP and TQFN packages.
This UART supports asynchronous I/O suitable for RS-232, RS-485, IR, and opto-isolated data links, including an IrDA timing mode for infrared communication. It features a crystal oscillator and a baud-rate generator capable of software-programmable rates from 300 baud to 230k baud. The device includes an 8-word FIFO buffer to minimize processor overhead and a flexible interrupt system with four maskable sources, including 9-bit address recognition.
Operating from a supply voltage of +2.7V to +5.5V, the MAX3100EEE consumes a typical operating current of 150µA at 3.3V. It also offers a low-power shutdown mode, reducing quiescent current to 10µA while still detecting receiver activity. The device includes two hardware-handshaking control lines and Schmitt-trigger inputs for opto-coupler interfaces. It is available in commercial and extended temperature ranges.
