The MAX3100CPD from Analog Devices is a universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) optimized for small microcontroller-based systems. It utilizes an SPI/MICROWIRE interface for host microcontroller communication and is available in a compact 14-pin DIP package.
This UART supports asynchronous I/O for RS-232, RS-485, and IR data links, including an IrDA timing mode for infrared communication. It features a software-programmable baud-rate generator capable of speeds up to 230k baud with a 3.6864MHz crystal. The device includes an 8-word FIFO buffer to minimize processor overhead and a flexible interrupt system with four maskable sources, including 9-bit address recognition.
With a supply voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V, the MAX3100CPD operates at a low current of 150µA, with a shutdown mode reducing quiescent current to 10µA while still detecting receiver activity. It is suitable for applications such as handheld instruments, intelligent instrumentation, small networks in HVAC or building control, and low-cost IR data links.
The MAX3100CPD is mounted through-hole and comes in a 14-DIP package. Its operating temperature range is 0°C to 70°C.
